New month, new celebrations!

Hoo-boy, February is going to be a challenge.  February is:
  • Sweet Potato Month
  • Heart Healthy Month
  • National Potato Lover’s Month
  • Berry Fresh Month
  • Great American Pies Month
  • Chocolate Lover's Month
  • Snack Food Month
  • Berry Fresh in the Sunshine State Month
  • National Cherry Month
  • National Fiber Focus Month
  • National Hot Breakfast Month
  • National Grapefruit Month
Some of these make perfect sense.  Chocolate Lover's Month is perfect for February, what with Valentine's Day.  (Or as my friends like to call February 15th, Half-Off Chocolate Day.)  Others confuse me - is it supposed to be Berry Fresh Month or Berry Fresh in the Sunshine State Month?  Does that only mean Floridians are allowed to celebrate Berry Fresh Month?

Well, time to get started on the February celebrations!

Whoo! One month!

I've managed to go a full month of blogging!  I realize that some people have been blogging for years and one month is no big deal to some bloggers, but I have the habit of sometimes starting a project and not finishing it because I get bored with it, lose motivation, become busy or get interested in a new project.  And I'm not alone in this - so many blogs out there have one post and then are abandoned and never updated again.

When working out a plan for this blog, I decided that if I managed to update regularly for a month, I would assess my progress and decide what changes needed to be made.  So over the next week or so, I plan on tweaking the layout, working on more photos, and incorporating new themed posts.

Here's to one month of blogging and another future eleven!

Plotting a calendar

As part of my prep for this blog, I was checking my Meredith calendar against various calendars on the web.  The Meredith calendar lists one food for each day, probably in the interest of space, but some days are days where multiple foods are featured.  Some foods get more than one day!  (Which is totally not cool.  That's just greedy.)  Some calendars disagree on certain days - for example, one calendar says Popcorn Day is Jan 19, while another says Jan 31.  (And don't even get me started on Waffle Day - I've got five different dates so far!) I'll need to do a little more legwork to figure out how to resolve some of these conflicts.

One things I have noticed, though, is a sad lack of vegetables.  Oh, there's a Vegetarian Month and week, and a "Eat Your Fruits and Veggies" day, but no "Collards Day" or "Broccoli Day."  At least, I haven't found those.  Perhaps, if I manage to keep this blog going for the full  year, my next project would be to create a "healthy" or "vegetable" calendar where each day is honoring a different vegetable. Maybe I could even get different groups to join in and help promote the days.  Doable?  Maybe.  We'll see how I go with this blog first.

2012 Introduction

Did you know that every day is some sort of food holiday?  More accurately, a food observation day?  And every month is at least one food month?  Using a calendar put out by Meredith College's Nutrition Department and various internet resources, I've put together my own food calendar of what each month and day is.  My goal with this blog is to attempt a food related to the food observance of the day.

At least, that was the plan.

I hurt myself yesterday (seriously, a day before I start something like this?  How inconvenient can I get?) and have a bandaged finger now.  Trying to keep it dry and avoid alcohol while on meds puts a bit of a crimp in my plans for this blog.  Plus, I have do everything a little slower now.  But that's okay!  Plans can be changed, and while I'm healing up, I'll do my best to provide you with a roundup with information for the day's food.  Maybe even a recipe or two.  Once I get full use (or at least less-limited use of my hand) I'll get some pictures up as I attempt recipes.  In the meantime, this'll be a fairly drab blog with lots of text.  Le sigh.  But life tosses us curveballs and how we react to those is what defines us, no?

So, here's to 2012!
